WHERE DOES REIKI COME FROM?
The history of Reiki takes us back some 7,000 years. Reiki originated in Tibet, but it
got lost over the years. In the early
1900’s a Buddhist monk, Dr Mikao Usui,
rediscovered Reiki and it’s healing qualities in Japan. Having studied and practised healing for many
years, Dr Usui had found that many methods of healing
depleted the practitioner of their own energy when giving treatments. It was during a meditation that Dr Mikao Usui received the Reiki energy.
He then noticed how his own healing abilities had been enhanced and realised
that he was no longer drained of his own energy when giving healing.
Dr Usui later opened a clinic in Tokyo where he founded the
Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkei – the Usui Reiki Healing
Society.
Dr Mikao Usui gave
many Reiki treatments particularly to surviving victims of the Kanto earthquake
in 1923, which killed some 140,000 people. Some
survivors then became students of Dr Usui one of whom
was naval officer Dr Chujiro Hayashi.
He went on to take Reiki Master training with Dr Usui
and was one of his last Reiki Master students.
Dr Hayashi developed the teachings given to him by Dr Usui and opened his own clinic in Tokyo called Hayashi Reiki Kenyu-kai – the Hayashi Reiki Research Centre. The Reiki developed by Dr Hayashi forms the
basis of the forms of Reiki continually being taught today.
One of Dr Hayashi’s students was Mrs Hawayo
Takata and it was Mrs Takata that
brought Reiki healing to the western world where she trained and attuned 22
Reiki Masters to the Reiki energy.
